On World Water Day, the use of water as a natural refrigerant
This year, World Water Day, which is celebrated on March 22, is dedicated to the reduction and reuse of wastewater. The Group of Manufacturers of Evaporative Cooling Equipment of AEFYT, Association of Cold Companies and their Technologies, wants to take advantage of the occasion to draw attention to the use of water as a natural refrigerant.
Instituted by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1993, World Water Day commemorates this natural resource as an essential element for life and as a common denominator of all the challenges of sustainable development. This celebration offers an ideal discussion framework for member countries to discuss the management and conservation of water resources. In 2017, the theme chosen is “Wastewater, why waste water?”. The objectives are, among others, to raise awareness of the importance of improving water quality, reduce pollution, reduce the percentage of untreated wastewater and substantially increase recycling and safe water reuse.
Many of these points coincide with the responsible and sustainable use that evaporative cooling makes of this natural resource. Water quality, pollution reduction and safe reuse are some of the pillars of this equipment … The Group of Manufacturers of Evaporative Cooling Equipment of AEFYT wants to take this opportunity to claim the use of water as a natural refrigerant and, consequently, the first-order role played by cooling towers and evaporative condensers in terms of energy savings and efficiency.
The principle of operation of evaporative cooling equipment, used in cooling towers and evaporative condensers is a clean technology and respectful of the environment, to the extent that water is used as a coolant, a natural element that does not provide CO2 emissions . In this way, both the reduction of its consumption and its efficient use are favored:
• In these equipment a small amount of the water in recirculation evaporates and another is evacuated to avoid the concentration of salts.
• The technological improvements experienced by the cooling towers allow to consider that the phenomenon of drag, with the high efficiency separators placed on the market, can mean between 0.01% and 0.002% (in certain models) of the flow of water in recirculation, the amount of water that could be lost in the entrainment is between 20 and 100 times less than the evaporated water and up to five hundred less in some tower models.
• The amount of water lost by entrainment is not significant and the output of aerosols is of no practical importance if the standards are followed regarding the quality of the drop separators and the correct assembly and maintenance of the equipment.
The Group of Manufacturers of Evaporative Cooling Equipment also wants to take advantage of this occasion to stress the importance of avoiding an unjustified social alarm about these equipment and its possible link with the legionella bacteria, which is in the natural state of the water and that it is only dangerous to human health at abnormally high concentrations. A circumstance that, in the case of evaporative cooling equipment and other equipment and installations at risk-such as public fountains, nebulizers, spas and swimming pools, hot water installations, etc.-is easily controllable by following the maintenance advice collected in Royal Decree 865/2003, of July 4.
